Djibouti
Bonjour from #Djibouti! 🇩🇯My 132nd country, and maybe the most mysterious one yet. Do you know anything about this country, other than the name being synonymous with ‘your butt?’ .
To be fair, I didn’t know much either before arriving here early this morning. Had a long wait at immigration, but I eventually got in, and walked around all day long. Djibouti is a tiny country on the Red Sea surrounded by Yemen, Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia. It’s a French speaking country, as a result of the colonization by France in the 19th century, but a majority of the people are Arabic and everyone I met today was friendly. Djibouti is ridiculously expensive, for one reason or another, and it is not a touristy place. At all. There are a lot of expats here, but most of them are military-based because the US, France, Italy and China all have facilities here. Just observing the streets here, you can notice a huge contrast because the day-to-day life is crazy expensive (supermarket, taxis, etc) but 1/4th of the population lives in extreme poverty. How can anyone here afford these prices?? Have you ever been to Djibouti?
